Welcome to Ms.Der's Classpage!

 I am excited to meet all my students and their
 wonderful families! We will have a fantastic year
full of growth and learning together in Room 101!
This is my second year teaching and my first year
at Mary G. Porter! My goal is to create a safe space for
all my students so that they can learn to their fullest potential.

I will update this section of the class page
twice a week. Please continue to check this webpage,
as well as, Class Dojo for updates and reminders!
I plan to use this page as a resource for your family
and your child. You will find posts about what is happening
in first grade, dates for tests, key events, and also
great links to help support student learning.

It is important that your child practices his/her sight words and read for 20 minutes  every day.

 We went to the library and checked out a book. Please remember to have your child read for 20 minutes every night!

Please have your child start memorizing their student number, especially if they buy lunch. It is very important for them to know their student number to buy lunch, and login to the computers. Thank you!

Every week we will have sight word Wednesday, where we practice the week’s sight words that the students have been studying all week. We will practice writing and using our sight words in sentences every Wednesday! It is important that your child practices their sight words at home.

We are having a wonderful start to the beginning of the school year! Here are some quick reminders:
- please provide a healthy snack daily
- wear/bring tennis shoes every day for P.E and milers
- Return Porter and emergency forms (colorful packet) as soon as possible!
- Students should bring their agenda and red folder home and back daily! 

If you have not signed up class dojo please do so! We have some great pictures and messages that are communicated this way.

Volunteer Opportunities
We will always need water bottles for Room 101!
The smaller water bottles would be preferred,
but the large as well :).  3 Cases of water will be
equal to 3 volunteer hours. Please bring the cases
and document your hours with Ms. Michele and
Ms. Pat in the front office. Thank you!

Dear Porter Students and Families,

Welcome to first grade! It is a pleasure to welcome you to the 2019-2020 school year at Mary G. Porter Traditional School!

My name is Melanie Der and I am beyond thrilled to be your first grade teacher. I am looking forward to an exciting year full of learning, laughter and growing. Together, we will create a classroom community that provides a safe, bright and positive space for all students to come each day with a smile, and leave with an even bigger one! I believe that each student has great potential and can succeed, and it is my goal to challenge and encourage them to do so this year.

A little bit about me... I was born and raised here in Woodbridge, Virginia. I attended George Mason University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, as wells as a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I love teaching, and being able to learn and grow alongside my students. I love seeing my students succeed and cannot wait to see you do your very best! I am a sports fanatic, I root for all D.C. sports! I enjoy staying active and enjoying quality time with my friends and family. I also like to try new things and travel! What are some cool places you have traveled to? I look forward to getting to know each student, and their families! I will keep you informed through our class webpage and through individual communication. I encourage you to actively participate in your child’s education and welcome you to help in our classroom throughout the year. As the first day of school approaches I have a few reminders for all of you:

• Please visit the Porter website (www.porter.pwcs.edu) often and my classroom messenger page under the First Grade tab. It is full of information and upcoming events, as well as reminders of our uniform policy, important school information, and the summer reading lists. Please check it regularly for information regarding our class. This site will be a very useful tool during the school year to keep you up to date on important announcements related to our classroom and for links to extend learning at home!

• Please plan to attend the New Student Orientation and our Teacher Meet and Greet! You may bring any school supplies you have at that time. Please make sure they are labeled with your child’s name!

Enjoy the rest of your summer and don’t forget to do your summer reading. I am excitingly getting our classroom ready and I can’t wait to meet you soon!
