Welcome to 8th Grade Science

8th grade science is about the concepts of chemistry and physics. We as a class will be investigating the nature of universal laws and theories. The course is heavy with vocabulary concepts and laboratory practices. The primary factor within physical science is the atom and its interactions with energy. Students will also learn the concepts of: gravity, temperature, pressure, light, sound, thermodynamics, acceleration, forces, Newton's Laws, and a host of other interesting and universal concepts that are life changing insights for a student’s scientific education and high school success.

Science and Civics will alternate every other day.


Students will perform speed lab and analyze Speed and Acceleration graphs 
  • Students will investigate how Newton’s Laws predict motion. Motion and Forces unit test will be on 3/56/20.

2/17/20:  We have concluded our coverage of Chemistry and move into Physics. This week we will be investigating motion, beginning with Speed, Velocity, and Acceleration.

2/10/20: Students will take lab test on Chemical Reactions Lab on 2/10/20, then conduct Acids & Bases Lab. On 2/14/20, students take Unit Test Chemical Bonding and Reactions.

2/3/20: Students apply atomic bonding concepts to chemical reactions. Student will work in stations to explore bonding and reactions with "ball and stick" models and conduct a chemical reactions lab.

1/28/20: Students are learning about chemical/atomic bonding using Electron Dot Diagrams. Students will understand the difference between ionic and covalent compounds.

1/21/20:  Students learn about the classification of the groups in the periodic table into metals, nonmetals, and metalloids. Unit test on Atoms and the Periodic Table is on 1/23/20.

1/13/20: Students learn about the organization of the periodic table based on atomic number (protons and electrons). We will investigate electron configuration using Bohr models and Lewis dot diagrams. 

1/6/20: We look into the modern atomic model and introduce the development of the modern periodic table of elements. 

12/17/19: Students are introduced to history of Atomic Theory and the development of the modern atomic model.
12/9/19: Students study the Gas Laws as related to particle kinetic theory. Student observe and participate in demonstrations of gas behavior while changing pressure and temperature. States of matter test on 12/13/19.

12/2/19: Students learn about characteristics of states of matter and conduct lab to investigate temperature changes as water freezes and melts. Students analyze Phase Change Diagram resulting from data.
11/21/19: The Matter test is postponed until 11/25. Next, students learn about the particle-kinetic theory as it relates to states of matter.

11/13/19: Students conclude their chromatography lab by viewing separated primary color dyes. Students begin their lab on separating a mixture of salt sand and iron filings, where they will classify matter as pure substances (elements and compounds) and different types of mixtures (solutions and suspensions). Students will test on Matter and Classifying Matter on 11/21/19. 

11/6/19: Students are learning about Classifying matter as elements, compounds, or mixtures. Students shall use physical properties of food dye to separate a mixture using chromatography.

10/28/19: We have been working on measurement while covering "Describing Matter". Last week students investigated density of liquids (oil and water). Currently we are learning to Classify Matter by their Physical and Chemical Properties.
