-What is a worry? We all have worries. Everyone is scared of something. It is okay to have worries!

Week of April 20th: Kindness
-We have been practicing all year to complete random acts of kindness. When we do something kind for someone, we fill their invisible bucket. When we fill someone's bucket, our bucket gets filled too! When we dip from someone's bucket, we also dip from our own bucket.
-Our goal is to be bucket fillers, not bucket dippers!

Week of April 27th: Coping Skills
-What is a coping skill? A coping skill is something you do that helps you calm down when you have strong feelings such as feeling mad, angry, sad, or frustrated.

Week of May 4th: Coping Skills Continued
-This week we are reviewing coping skills. One helpful coping skill is to be mindful; be present in the moment and only focus on what you are doing right now.
-Take a mindful walk outside (With parent/ guardian permission!)

Remember that each person has their own personal space bubble, including you! We don't like people to enter our bubble unless they ask first. Examples when other people may enter your personal space bubble is when you give a high five or a hug.

September Lessons:

1) Introduction to the Counselor

Students will learn and understand my role as the school counselor
-Who I am
-What I do
-How to reach me

2) Kindness
We will be reading The Jelly Donut Difference and having a class discussion on kindness. Each student will be adding a "sprinkle" to the class donut poster to represent their promise to be kind to others. Students will also be coming up with an example of how they can show random acts of kindness. We will be using a large bowl of water and food coloring to demonstrate the ripple effect that being kind can have on our community!

October Lessons:
1) Bullying
We will be focusing on bullying: what it feels like/ what it looks like. Students will be given statements where they have to determine if it's bullying or not. We will be reading Enemy Pie and discuss ways to address bullying and conflict with peers. Students will receive a problem solving star paper that provides different strategies to handle conflict. We will also be making a "friendship" pie, where students will identify traits of a good friend.  

2) Careers
We read the book When I Grow Up to start our discussion on careers in our community. Students identified career fields that interest them. Students drew a picture and wrote sentences about their top career choice. After sharing career choices with the class, we discussed our upcoming Career Day on Friday, October 25th!

November Lessons:
1) Diversity
We will be reading the book It's Okay To Be Different by Todd Parr. Students will be coming up with their own way that their are unique or different and drawing a picture/ writing sentences about it. Students will also work on a mindfulness coloring activity about diversity. Lastly, each student will complete a puzzle piece about what makes them diverse. All puzzle pieces will be put together and displayed for the school.

December Lessons:
1) Small vs. Big Problems
Students will be learning the difference between small problems and big problems. Students will learn strategies to deal with small problems that they can solve on their own. Students will also learn what to do when they encounter a big problem. Each student will write a problem on a sticky note and place under Small, Medium, or Big problem on a large poster.

2) Anxiety
We started out our lesson by reading the book Worry Says What? We then discussed what a worry is and how our bodies feel during times of worry. Students practiced talking back to their worries and identified a calming strategy to help them. We practiced "5 finger breathing."

January Lessons:
1) Goal Setting
We discussed what a goal is and why we set goals in life. Students worked together as a class to accomplish a team building goal by getting a hula hoop around the circle holding hands. They loved this fun activity and we concluded the class with students discussing their own personal goals for the 2020 school year.

2) Mindfulness
During this lesson, we will be focusing on what it means to be 'mindful.' We will be reading the book Mindful Monkey, Happy Panda. Students will learn the difference between a monkey brain (When we have too many thoughts at one time) versus a mindful brain (a place of calm). We will be practicing four different types of deep breathing techniques and students will make their very own coping skills books.

February Lessons:
1) Empathy
During this lesson, we focused on what empathy means. We played an escape game activity working together in teams to learn that empathy means that we try to understand another person's feelings. All students decorated empathy ribbons to hang in the 2nd grade hallway!

2) Keeping Friends
We read the book How to Lose All Your Friends. Students quickly caught on that this book focuses on what NOT to do to your friends. Students then created slips of paper with inspirational words of kindness and friendship. Each slip of paper was linked together and displayed in the hallway for our Kindness Chain.

March Lessons:
1) Cooperation
Students discussed what cooperation means (One of our star qualities). Students were then split up into small teams to try and build the tallest standing tower out of marshmallows and spaghetti noodles. Students quickly learned how frustrating and challenging it can be to work on a team. We processed as a class how this activity felt and what made it so hard for groups to accomplish the task.
