Today in Civics~
4/18/17~ Now that we have returned from spring break, we will be busy preparing for the Civics and Economics SOL. The test will take place on Thursday, May 4th. Students have been given review materials and they are also posted on Edmodo for them.
3/31/17~ Benchmark test, Wednesday, April 5th!!
3/28/17~ Just a reminder about the quiz on Thursday. We will have a benchmark test on Wednesday, April 5th. There are study guides on Edmodo and on the files and documents page.
3/24/17~ There will be a quiz on economics on Thursday, March 30th.
3/21/17~ We will begin our Economics units starting with the principles of economics and the different types of economic systems. Students criminal project is due Friday, 3/24 (this was extended due to the snow days last week.)
3/20/17~We finished our last Civics unit of the year last week and took the IA test today.
3/3/17 ~ Next week we continue our unit on the Judicial Branch. We will be analyzing some landmark supreme court cases that deal with the first amendment freedoms. We will also compare civil and criminal cases.
2/27/17~ We will continue our unit on the judicial branch this week by reviewing the structure of the United States' dual court system, discussing judicial review and Marbury vs. Madison, and looking at Supreme Court decisions.
***There will be a quiz on Thursday, March, 2nd.***
2/21/17~ We began our final Civics unit today on the Judicial Branch. Students will understand the structure of the judicial branch at both the federal and state level, the different types of jurisdiction and the power of judicial review.
All notes and vocabulary for the unit are on Edmodo and in the files and documents page.
2/15/17~ This week we are moving on to our Citizenship unit. During this unit students will learn the rights, duties and responsibilities of US citizens as well as the means to obtain citizenship. There will be a quiz at the end of this unit, not test.
I have several different opportunities for remediation, if your child needs additional support please contact me.
2/1/16~ Reminder Q2 benchmark test is Friday, Feb. 3rd. I have posted a review guide and study guide in the "Review Folder"
1/26/16~ Correction. Due to the work day on Monday we will have civics Wednesday and Friday next week, therefore, the benchmark will be on FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3rd! (not the 2nd as previously stated)
1/23/16~ We have started unit 6 Federalism and the state government. Students will understand the powers and structure of the government at the national, local and state levels. There will be a benchmark test on February 2nd. This test will cover units 1-6. Students will get a study guide on Wednesday and I will post it in my documents folder.
1/12/16~ REMINDER- There is a quiz tomorrow and the presidential roles comic strip is due. It is also the last day for unit 4 test retakes. Remember, there is no school on Monday!
1/9/16~ A few reminders for the week. Students will have a quiz on unit 5 on Friday, January 13th. Students were assigned a presidential roles comic strip that is also due on Friday, January 13th. I have attached the directions and rubric to the unit 5 folder "files and documents". It is also on Edmodo.
Several students have asked about retakes, we will review this week and the opportunity for retakes will be Friday.
1/5/16~ Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed their break. We will start the new year reviewing the three branches of government at the national level finishing this unit with the lawmaking process. Next, we begin our unit on the state and local government. At the conclusion of these units students will have an understanding of the system of federalism and the powers of the government at the national, state, and local levels.
12/15/16~ I have posted a study guide for the unit 4 test in the folders and also on Edmodo. The unit 4 test is Tuesday, December 20th.
12/13/16~ We continue to review the earlier documents that influenced the US Constitution, but have begun unit 5 "National Government". In this unit students will study the purpose of the Constitution as explained in the preamble, the three branches of government at the national level, and separation of powers and checks and balances.
There will be a quiz on the preamble 12/16 and an IA test 12/20.
12/5/16~ There will be a quiz this week in Civics on the earlier documents and their influence on the US Constitution.
12/2/16~ We are finishing up our unit on the earlier documents that influenced the US Constitution. We will continue talking about the purpose of the Constitution for our next unit.
The IA test will be on December 20th, before the winter break.
I have updated my files and document folder and Edmodo with notes from this unit.
11/18/16~ I have updated the unit 4 folder with sections from the documents we discuss this unit. Students can read these to gain some background knowledge on each of the documents.
11/15/16~ We began unit 4~ Documents this week. This unit discusses the earlier documents and their influence on the U.S. Constitution. I have created a new folder in "files and documents" and there are assignments on Edmodo for students.
Students took the benchmark test last week. I am working on getting those grades in the gradebook and should have student grades in soon. Please check parental portal.
11/9/16~ Civics benchmark test is tomorrow. An answer key to the study guide is on Edmodo and in the benchmark folder in "files and documents" on this page.
11/7/2016~ Reminder Civics benchmark test is on Thursday, November 10th. I have placed a study guide in "files and documents" and also my Edmodo page. Students should use this to review. They can also review using SOLpass.org, quizlet, and quizizz.
11/2/16~ Reminder the unit 3 test on elections and political parties is on Thursday, November 3rd. Review material has been posted on my Edmodo page.
Students need to bring in the permission slip and money for the field trip to the Newseum that is scheduled for November 17th.
10/31/16~ The study guide for the test on Thursday has been added to "files and documents" it is titled unit 3 study guide. I have also added it to my Edmodo page.
10/28/16~ The unit 3 test is scheduled for Thursday, November 3rd. We will review in class on Tuesday. Students should review unit 3 in their binders. Students can also review using SOLPASS.
10/25/16~ We are almost finished with our unit on elections and political parties. This week we are learning about the rising cost of campaigns, campaign finance reform and the electoral college. We will wrap up our unit on October 26th. The test will be next week.
10/20/16~ Students need to complete their political cartoons, ads, posters. They started them in class Tuesday and had time today to work on them. They are due Monday, October 24th.
10/18/16~ We are continuing our unit on Elections and Political Parties. This week we are turning our focus from roles of political parties to the roles of the media and voting.
Students will use strategies such as: separating fact from opinion, detecting bias, identifying propaganda and evaluating sources to analyze political cartoons. Students began creating their own campaign ads and political cartoons in class today.
All grades have been updated with make-up work and the quiz from Friday. Please make sure you are checking parent portal to keep updated with grades.
10/5/16~ I have updated the Elections and Political Parties folder in files and documents with the vocabulary, notes, and readings for this unit. ***Reminder that the PSA project is due Friday, October 7th****
9/29/16~ We began our unit on Elections and Political Parties today. During this unit students will understand the role of political parties and the political process in the United States.
9/29/16~ All but a few students have taken the unit 1 and 2 test. Grades have been updated in the gradebook.
I have extended the due date for the PSA to next week. The written part is due by Wednesday and the presentation is due Friday. Students will begin presenting on Friday.
9/23/16- As we prepare for our unit on Elections and Political Parties students were asked to watch the Presidential debate(10 minutes) and answer five questions.
Some students will need to take their unit 1 and 2 test on Tuesday.
9/22/16~ Students should study for their unit test tomorrow. The test will cover Citizenship Traits and Responsibilities and the Fundamental Political Principles. (All notes, reading and vocabulary are in "Files and Documents"
9/19/16~ We continued learning about the Foundations of American government today in class. The test for this unit will be Friday, September 23rd.
9/15/16~ Today we will introduce Unit 2: Foundations of Government, in this unit students will learn about the fundamental principles that have shaped American government.
9/13/16~ Students took their Civics pre-test today. This will help us plan each unit. This did not count as a grade.
9/7/16We set up our Civics binders in class today with our first unit. Please look for some paperwork to come home with your child about Civics class.
