Get to Know the Teacher
Hello Parents! I'm looking forward to working with you to ensure that your children have a successful year. I will be updating the announcements above to let you know what we are learning, where we are going, and when I am giving a test.
This will be my third year at Porter after moving from California in 2014. I love being stationed in Virginia and am thrilled to be at Porter. I have two grown children, Rebecca and Sara. Rebecca is in the Airforce and lives in Arizona with her husband, Alex. Sara is a college student in California. My husband, John, is in the Army, and lives with me between his missions and deployments.
I have a lot of hobbies and interests. I volunteer at the USO on Fort Belvior and help run their UFC night. UFC is my favorite sport, followed by the rodeo and baseball. Go Giants! I'm interested in sewing but not very good at it. What I create often looks like a bad day on Project Runway. I also love to exercise and I recently started eating clean but will not turn down a cupcake if offered.
Education and Experience
While living in California, I received my Masters in Cross-cultural Teaching after changing my major from mathematics to education. Growing up in a community of friends who were first and second generation English language learners, I had a heart for working with struggling students. I returned to the farming community of Hollister, California and became an elementary teacher.
After six years in elementary, I was offered a position at an advanced placement middle school, the Accelerated Achievement Academy, which I accepted. When my husband was stationed at Fort Belvior, I applied with the Prince William School District as a middle school math teacher. I was granted a Virginia State Teaching Certificate for Preschool through fifth grade and mathematics through eighth. This will be my third year at Porter, making it my eleventh year teaching.
